It has been revealed that some police officers lack prosecuting skills during court sittings and this has had an impact on the outcome of certain cases.

Acting Police Commissioner, ACP Rusiate Tudravu made the revelation at the closing of a six weeks Advanced National Prosecutions Course in Suva today.

ACP Tudravu says the quality of police prosecution were not up to par of those who are academically trained.

“There is a disparity in the quality of case presentation before the courts that is a given in some instance such a disparity have impacted on the outcome of some cases. The Court is neutral it seats fairly and squarely in the middle and referees the proceedings to the law. It cannot be seen therefore, to be leaning over to one side – favoring the prosecution due to its lack of knowledge or the background because they are just Police Officers.”

ACP Tudravu says despite the disparity, prosecution by Police has generally been successful.

He adds the course which was facilitated by the DPP will greatly assist in improving the officer’s prosecuting skills.

The acting Police Commissioner reminded the officers’ about their responsibility towards the public and the importance of thoroughly investigating a case before presenting in court.

Meanwhile, of the twenty-eight graduates, eight were awarded special recognition.
