Solomons backs Fiji at UN

The Solomon Islands has stated that it recognises the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Fiji.

Prime Minister Gordon Lilo was addressing the UN General Assembly in New York last week.

He says that the Solomon Islands will continue to dialogue with Fiji and called on the region and the international community to support Fiji’s “Engaging with the Pacific” process and its road map to the 2014 general elections.

Lilo added that the Solomons welcomes Fiji’s commitment to hold general elections in 2014.

He says Solomon Islands has also strengthened its mediating role through the Melanesian Spearhead Group made up of Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia.
