Solomon Islanders celebrate independence

Solomon Islands descendants today crowded Marata village in Wailoku to celebrate the 34th anniversary of independence of the land of their ancestors.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was the chief guest at today’s event.

He says Fiji and Solomon have a long standing relationship.

“As you all know, our long friendship and mutual support has seen Fijian servicemen distinguish themselves during the allied campaign in WWII. More recently, Fijian soldiers and Policemen have assisted the Solomon Islands as part of RAMSI. Both countries are founding members of the Melanesian SpearHead group. Our two nations has worked together on this level to advance political and economic development in the region.”

Bainimarama says Fiji s servicemen have been working in the Solomon Islands right from World War II and also a part of RAMSI.

Bainimarama has highlighted Governments commitment to ensure that minor communities in Fiji are looked after and their welfare taken care of.
