SOE hits out at Dr Gounder

October 24, 2018 4:22 am

Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem has hit out at Dr Neelesh Gounder – a lecturer at the School of Economics at USP for comments he made to ABC News.

Saneem says Dr Gounder made allegations that the number of voters had duplications in the voters register.

He says the Fijian Elections Office has asked Dr Gounder to step up with information to validate his allegation, but he has not come up with anything.

Saneem says care must be shown during political campaigns to ensure that personal political interests do not interfere in other people’s judgments.

“Now this is the type of risk that we face when the freedom of speech is being used as a curtain to make wild unsubstantiated claims. I think what Dr Goundar doesn’t realize is that the voters register is an actual document, it is not a theatrical document which can be maneuvered through one’s own thoughts and beliefs but is rather something that you can touch, feel and verify.”

Questions sent to Dr Gounder on the issue remain unanswered.
