It’s now lying in a small waterfall in Tailevu – one that feeds into the Wainibuka river.

Eye witnesses say that the ten wheeler truck carrying 20 tonnes of the chemical Sodium Cyanide veered off the road here at Savuliliwa waterfall near Wainivo Settlement.

Isimeli Nakalevu was there when the incident happened and says he tried to help the driver of the vehicle after the accident

Police officers and personnel from the National Fire Authority say the chemicals are still in solid form and have not spilt out of the container.

Sodium Cyanide is extremely harmful to the central nervous system, the heart and blood vessels as well as the pulmonary system.

While the chemical has not leaked into the waterway, people in the area are being advised to avoid the Wainibuka River as a precaution.
