Social protection and agriculture helps assist poor

Fiji has achieved the Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of hungry people.

World Food Day has been marked with the theme ’Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the cycle of rural poverty.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation Pacific Coordinator Gavin Wall – Social Protection and Agriculture are key to enhancing food security.

_"Social protection is an important part of the 2030 Agenda as it is considered a crucial instrument to assist poor communities out of poverty .It is defined as programmes that provide financial or on kind support to reduce poverty and hunger through income security and alleviation of credit and increasing access to resources."-

Wall says agriculture is also critical in raising the living standards of people and investing in this sector still remains the most effective way to lift people out of poverty.
