A new site has been identified for the construction of a jetty that will be the main port for those travelling between Vanua Levu and Taveuni.

The current jetty at Navutu in Cakaudrove will be closed in May.

Minister for Infrastructure Jone Usamate says the owner of the land where the jetty is located has given notice.

A site has been identified at Vunikura Village, just a few kilometres from Natuvu.

“This jetty will have to close soon. The people that run the Mission here (Mission at Natuvu Creek) would like us to move to another place, so we went to see the site.”

Buca Village in Cakaudrove has also offered 100 acres of land for the construction of the jetty.

Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea told the Minister, the site at Vunikura is more suitable as the travelling time will be much less.

A 120 meters long jetty will be constructed at the new site to allow for vessels and ferries servicing the route to berth.
