There’s a shortage of teachers at degree levels for subjects such as Maths, Physics, Industrial Arts, Special Education, Early Childhood, English, Information and Technology.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says Fiji has a lot of good teachers however, they only have Diploma qualifications.

Sayed-Khaiyum says it’s difficult to find a teacher for high school level who has a Masters in teaching.

He adds the government is now trying to upskill teachers.

“We’re also offering now at Post Graduate level, 20 awards for teachers holding a Bachelor’s degree for them to go do for example the Master’s degree or PHD in the areas of Maths, Physics, Language and Literature so they can then upgrade. We’re also offering ten overseas awards for post graduate studies in areas of teacher training, Tourism, Agriculture and Fisheries and Forestry.”

The AG was speaking at the 2018/2019 budget roadshow with the public and civil servants in Suva today.
