Acting Secretary General to Parliament Viniana Namosimalu says the secretariat is preparing the appointment of a new Speaker.

In the wake of the passing of the late Speaker, Dr. Jiko Luveni, work has carried on at the Parliament precinct.

The ASG says this has been possible given the diligence of Deputy Speaker of the House, Veena Bhatnagar.

“The Deputy Speaker has stepped in to perform the duties of the Speaker and she has done that beautifully.  She’s fitted in, in terms of providing that leadership and guidance for the secretariat and she has done that very well so far.”

Namosimalua has also clarified that they are awaiting the government’s direction on whether a special sitting will be held to appoint the new speaker or if it will wait until the House is in session.

Parliament is scheduled to sit from the 11^th to the 15^th of next month.
