Sex Education vital from early age

Having an open discussion with your children about sex and other matters is not only healthy but is the first step to the prevention of sexual assault crimes.

Child psychologist, Dr Myrielle Allen says it won’t be easy or without awkward moments.

But it is important to have the talk with your child at an early age.

‘‘We teach our children to name their parts of the body, my toes, my knees and we jump to my shoulders, my head and we forget ‘this part’. Whereas if you teach them, this is for example, whatever term you use, for example, the genitalia area, you could say, ‘that’s the flower or the bird’ whichever, that that is a no touch zone’’.

Dr Allen says the earlier the child is taught to do things for themselves such as having a bath or going to the shower that is the time to have the talk with them.

The FWCC recorded a total of 33 cases of Child Abuse from January to May for this year.
