Several streets in Suva will undergo major upgrade changes by the Fiji Roads Authority to improve its traffic movements.

These streets include Renwick Road, Central Street, Thomson Street, and Stinson parade, Edward Street, Scott Street, Usher Street and Pier Street.

FRA Chief Executive Jonathan Moore says this aims to address continual increase in traffic numbers, parking demands and the safety needs of the high pedestrian volumes in the City.

“It’s a first step and i actually think the Suva Center right now is a bit chaotic with the volume of traffic so this is the first step to try and relieve the pressure. We’re looking at a total transportation study which involves all of the city centers and the maybe around it as well so that allows us to look at things like car parking, pedestrianization and allows us to look at bus routes as well. We’re also looking into the possibility of parking right schemes as well which is big in the future but all this goes in the same intention to relieve congestion in Suva.”

Meanwhile, the FRA says the total transportation study will be conducted later this year and also looks into areas of proper car parking, crossing access, bus shelters and even bus routes.
