A total of 70 officers from the Land Transport Authority will be out on our roads during the festive season.

LTA Board Chair Vijay Maharaj says their joint operation with the Police Force will focus on reducing the number of fatalities on our roads.

Maharaj says this will also ensure the safety of the travelling public and that driver’s drive within the speed limit.

The whole purpose is to create deterrence from speeding. People on festive season do silly things like drunk and driving and we try and deter them by having more visibility on the main roads, and some of the inner roads as well in the city and outer areas.

Police Chief of Operations ACP Maretino Qiolevu says they have recorded 40 road fatalities in the West which has continually been a hotspot for accidents.

The focus will be more on the Western Division and also on the Hot Spots. When I say hot spots, it’s the places where fatalities often occurred and where people or motorists committed traffic infringement. These are the areas we are focusing on.”

Meanwhile all LTA speed and red light cameras on our roads will be operational from Monday.
