Senior police officer receives suspended sentence

A suspended sentence was handed down to a Border Police Unit Commanding Officer at the Nadi Magistrates Court today.

Pita Keni was sentenced to six months imprisonment with a three year suspension, along with a fine of $500 to be paid within thirty days to avoid a further fifty days in prison.

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) charged Keni in 2014 with one count of Failure to Render Assistance” and one count of “Resisting or Obstructing Officers.

He was found guilty for the first count and not guilty for the second by a Nadi Magistrate last December.

Keni, while being a public servant employed by the Police Force failed to assist FICAC by refusing to provide information relevant to a bribery case against former Acting Inspector of the Force, Timoci Naulu between September 2013 and March 2014.
