Senior citizens and persons with disabilities will continue to benefit from the bus fare subsidies when the e-ticketing system formally comes into effect from October.
Minister for Social Welfare Mereseini Vuniwaqa has confirmed over fifty five thousand senior citizens and three thousand persons with disabilities are registered under the subsidy scheme.
Vuniwaqa says dates will soon be announce from when people who qualify for fare concession can collect their e-Transport cards from its various departments.
“So this card for them would mean they wouldn’t have to carry cash and also currently some bus companies are not honouring that 50% subsidy that are being granted to senior citizens .So with the cash less bus fare initiative it’s mean that there is no way to go around so that these Fijians who are beneficiaries of bus fare subsidy can finally take the benefit of what been offered to them by government.”
Over six hundred and fifty thousand cards will be distributed to passengers in different categories and the cards are colour differentiated to passenger types for ease of recognition
