To increase the level of preparedness of Fiji in responding to earthquake and Tsunami warnings, the Seismology unit at the Mineral Resource department is now working around the clock.
Permanent Secretary for Mineral Resources Malakai Finau confirmed this to FBC News.
With small earthquakes occurring frequently around the country, Finau says the seismology unit are well up to par with daily work of monitoring and surveillance.
“The mineral resource department seismology unit which monitors earthquakes and Tsunami in Fiji is now operating 24/7, so that’s a big improvement even in the odd hours if an event happens they are there to monitor and disseminate information to the relevant agencies.”
With majority of Fiji’s population living along coastal areas, the Mineral Resource Department continues to create awareness to ensure that people do adhere to warnings issued.
