Seawall to be built for Namoli village

Good news for the villagers of Namoli in Lautoka as the construction of a seawall is now underway.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Dr. Mahendra Reddy says the construction of the 440m seawall will help in the prevention of loss of coastal land and flooding – which Namoli villagers have been facing over the past few years.

“This will lead to the prevention of coastal erosion, prevention of coastal flooding and protection of infrastructure.”

Village Headman, Joji Satala says villagers had pleaded to Government for assistance as they wanted to save their coastland.

He says they even came up with their own preventative measures however, it was not enough.

“It has damaged our environment and foreshore over the past few years. Also, a lot of houses are close to the sea and when we experience king tides the waters enter the houses.”

The cost of the seawall is more than $700,000 which includes a drain and culvert.
