The Suva City Council has seen a decrease in the stray dog population in the capital city.

Council’s Acting Chief Executive Bijay Chand says stray dogs were becoming a nuisance and there were numerous complaints made to the council.

Chand says stray dog trapping campaigns organized by the council and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals this year, were successful.

“Usually what we do we look for funding from the donor agencies plus some contributions from the council and the vet’s are normally organized by the SPCA. So what we have to provide the volunteers is just the accommodation and the meals.”

More dog trapping campaigns will be organized next year.
