Savusavu to Suva submarine cable to be launched soon

The Savusavu to Suva underwater cable system is expected to be launched soon.

With access to high speed internet – telecommunication companies will be closely monitored by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission to ensure fair prices are charged.

FCCC Chief Executive, Joel Abraham says they’re working with the World Bank and the Communications Ministry to look into the cost models, tariffs and the quality of service for this project.

“Our role is to really ensure that market forces are at competitive levels, the rate that are offered by the telecommunications companies to the users of the service they are quite fit and proper for all Fijians, the affordability levels are there, the accessibility is there and as such, access into infrastructure for these companies become essential.”

In order to carry out the task, FCCC has engaged the consultancy services of Paul McCann from the World Bank.

“What I’m doing for the FCCC is to coordinate a project and to get experts in to look at the networks that are in place and to actually ensure that moving forward the people of Fiji can enjoy cost effective and world class standard telecommunications.”

Through the setting up of this cable, Fijians will have faster internet connectivity of speed up to 100 gigabytes per second.
