Suva City Council enforcement officers will be stationed at the Suva Bus Station on a twenty four hour basis.

Special Administrator Chandu Umaria says their presence is not just a short term solution.

He adds, the Council is footing the extra cost of having these officer monitor movement at the bus station.

“My enforcement officers, at present they are working during their normal hours. Now they will be working overtime, 7 days a week. So the council will bear the extra costs on the wages and salaries for overtime. This is something we can afford. I don’t mind spending the money as the safety of the public is more important than the money."

Umaria says the SCC has been meeting with the Land Transport Authority and the Fiji Bus Operators Association in a combined effort to ensure the accident that killed a mother and her daughter a few weeks ago is not repeated.

The Council is also planning to install CCTV cameras at the bus station.
