Rudra Maharaj sentenced for bribery

Former Information and Public Relations Officer at the Prime Minister’s Office Rudra Maharaj has been sentenced to four years and eleven months imprisonment.

Maharaj was convicted of one count of bribery for taking two thousand dollars cash from one Avin Prakash and two cheques amounting to ten thousand dollars.

This was payment for using his influence in procuring a contract.

In sentencing, Judge Justice Priyantha Fernando highlighted that Maharaj played the leading role in soliciting the bribe.

He says the accused breached the trust bestowed in him as a civil servant.
Maharaj also had further discussions with Prakash, the complainant -asking for the money.

Judge Fernando says civil servants are meant to serve the public with utmost faith and trust.

Maharaj will be eligible for parole after serving three and half years and also has to pay a fine of $2,000.
