Fijians in the Mamanuca and Yasawa group of islands are experiencing rough seas and heavy swells.

Tamusua, Yasawa Villager Siona Ratulevu says heavy rain battered the group last night with wind speeds picking up this morning.

Ratulevu adds villagers started preparations yesterday and have been advised to refrain from unnecessary movements, particularly at sea.

“As we speak, rain starts to pick up again. Wind speed is slowly picking up. Right now, all villagers are still in their respective houses and no one has moved to the community hall and church which we normally use as our evacuation centres.”

Yarolevu, Malolo villager Joseva Natakalevu says things are calm at the moment after heavy rain overnight.

He adds some villagers have started nailing up shutters and putting sandbags on roof-tops to ensure their houses are well secured.
