Root crop farms mostly damaged

The Ministry of Agriculture assessment teams on the ground have reported that most damage on agriculture is on root crops.

Paula Tuione, the Principle Agriculture Officer North told a DISMAC briefing this morning that about 6,134 hectares of root crops have been damaged and this is set to increase as assessment teams are still on the ground.

He says the total cost of damage so far on agriculture in the Bua and Cakaudrove Provinces recorded after two days of assessments stand at $13,82 million.

In Bua, 602 farmers were affected while in Cakaudrove 825 farms
Damage of root crops, fruits, assorted vegetables and livestock in Bua amount to over $8.5 million while in Cakaudrove so far it is over $5,2 million.

There is no record yet of damage in Taveuni as assessments are still being carried out.

Tuione says these amounts will increase when the reports is compiled on Monday next week.
