An idea to help rural women save money on cooking is also going to help reduce the effects of climate change in the future.

A rocket stove which saves on firewood and kerosene is now being piloted in a rural community in Nausori.

Women Minister – Dr Jiko Luveni says low income households can save up to five hundred and twenty dollars on kerosene and six hundred dollars on gas every year.

“Using firewood rather than kerosene and very little firewood. It has been designed in such a way that it will use very little firewood for maximum heat and this is why it is called the rocket stove.”

The stove is made of heat resistant concrete… and is built to last.

Twenty-two women of Neelgiri Mother’s Club in Sawani Nausori underwent training on how to build these Green Rocket stoves.
