Special consideration needs to be given to combat speeding cases that have resulted in accidents along the new Nakasi and Nausori highway.

FRA Chief Executive, Jonathan Moore says despite no fatal accidents yet, a major accident can happen if drivers continue to drive recklessly.

Moore says the long section of the road can become hazardous once it fully opens to traffic later this year.

“With drivers continuing to drive recklessly and ignore all signs and put my workers at risk, we may end up closing sections of the road by putting speed humps. I have already asked LTA to consider putting traffic camera’s once the job is finished on the entire road to try to manage the speed issue which is reckless and stupid.”

Moore says the Land Transport Authority and relevant stakeholders need to consider safety precautions once the long section of the road fully opens.

Meanwhile, in a press release yesterday, LTA has confirmed that from next month Automatic Number Plate Recognition speed cameras will become active in all parts of Fiji.
