FRA terminates SARUP 2 contract

November 19, 2019 6:59 am

The Guizhou Road and Bridge Company’s contract to rehabilitate 17 deteriorated road within the greater Suva area has been terminated.

Fiji Roads Authority in a statement says the company was awarded the contract for the delivery of the Suva Arterial Road Upgrading Project 2 (SARUP 2) in March 2019.

FRA says the termination follows the inability of the Guizhou Company to effectively mobilize the project and has been penalized due to the non-completion of two of the roads that should have been completed in October.

FRA Chief Executive Jonathan Moore says the contractor had been given multiple chances to meet the contractual agreement but failed to live up to it.

“The contractor had been given multiple chances to improve but had not been able to rise to the challenge, and had shown no sign that they would be able to in the future. This decision has been extensively considered, and there is no denying that the nonperformance of the Contractor presents the FRA with a number of problems because the work is now overdue by 12 months and the roads continue to deteriorate at an accelerated rate.”

Moore says they can no longer proceed with a contractor showing no signs of improvement and their main focus now is on delivering the rehabilitated roads with minimal additional delay.
