The Fiji Roads Authority has engaged a technical team to conduct soil survey along some of the major highways.
This is to support their work in early detection of landslides.
Minister for Disaster Management, Jone Usamate says the team will also conduct a survey on topography and slope stability to predict when landslides are likely to happen.
“Plans are in place to address the threats of landslide and slips. While we cannot be in all places at once it is important we focus on areas that matter the most in terms of the safety of the traveling public and to ensure better protection of our roads and infrastructure.
The Minister says landslides are also caused by poor land use planning.”
Therefore, there’s a need to ensure that land and property owners implement good land practice to protect infrastructure.
Usamate says mitigation measures have also been implemented as part of the remedial rehabilitation of areas where landslides are likely to happen.
