There is a merge in the services provided by the Rural Local Authority and the municipal councils.

Minister for Local Government, Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Kumar says the merge is an outcome of a thorough analysis and a policy research that is in line with the Fijian constitution.

Kumar says the rural local authority consists of health inspectors and that their work is crucial in ensuring the safety of every Fijian.

He adds the budget allocation for this authority has also been increased to $300,000 compared to $200,000 last year and is pleading to his officials to best utilize the assistance.

“When government assistance is provided make sure that it is used as a means of enabling you as local government agencies to achieve that said task that comes with the assistance. We need to plan before not when you are given funds then you start planning.”

He adds the merge is in line with the National Development Plan by promoting equal opportunities for all Fijians.

There are currently 16 Rural Local Authorities around the country.
