Commander RFMF, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto.

Military Commander Viliame Naupoto says he will leave allegations of assault on a cane cutter in Labasa to the relevant authorities.

A newspaper article earlier this week claimed that a cane cutter was assaulted by a soldier after being accused of stealing a hunting rifle from a farmer’s house.

Commander Naupoto confirms he has been informed that there was no such assault.

The Rear Admiral says some cane cutters were questioned by his officers looking for the missing rifle which was found later.

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission this week issued a statement that it was investigating the incident.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirms this alleged incident is being investigated after a report was lodged about a week ago.
