RFMF calls for more scrutiny on Convention

April 24, 2019 7:34 am

The RFMF has expressed its reservations on some articles in the International Convention on the Protection of the rights of all migrant workers.

While making submissions on the treaty, Deputy Commander Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz called for more scrutiny from the Attorney General’s office on the provision of this treaty.

Brigadier Aziz says there needs to be more clarification from the AG’s office regarding compensation for person discharge of any criminal liability.

Another reservation of the Force was the issue of migrant workers forming association and trade unions as more clarity is needed in this provision.

Aziz states there is a great need of having more discussions on the provision of Visas to migrants, as many do change employment while on a principal contract in Fiji.

Despite the reservations, Brigadier Aziz has urged the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense to consider the adaptation of the convention on the protection of migrant workers.
