The Department of Fisheries is encouraging coastal areas to maintain living sea creatures in their environment and find ways of reviving it for future generation.
The message was relayed after a five year ban was formally placed on the tradition fishing ground or I qoliqoli owned by the people of Cautata ,Bau in Tailevu on Friday .
Acting Central Fisheries Divisional Head Tarisi Shaw says the initiative to protect their fishing ground is part of the Ministry’s program to replenish the depleting fish stock.
“One of the strategy in order to improve or enhance the fisheries stocks is through the establishment of the marine protected areas with initiative coming from communities to the department where we assist in terms of technical assistance research and also community consultation.”
The Fiji Locally Managed Marine Areas Network [FLMAN ] believes the longer the fishing ground is protected the better it is.
