The comprehensive review of the outdated Local Government Act from 1972 is well underway.
Minister responsible, Parveen Bala says a Local Government Committee was appointed to prepare the Terms of Reference and will soon present its report to the Ministry.
“The Local Government Committee met with municipal councils, relevant stake holders, permanent secretaries and all directors of the ministry. The committee was tasked to prepare draft terms of reference for ministry’s consideration and then submitted to cabinet.”
Bala says the Committee will also give recommendations on the five members for Review Committee that will review that act.
The committee was appointed in 2015 and is responsible for determining the extension of town boundaries as well as the declaration of town and cities.
The Minister clarified the review process during the Local Government Forum in Suva which began today.
The three-day forum will end on Friday.
