Retailers selling tobacco products urged to register

February 1, 2016 6:29 pm

The Health Ministry is reminding all tobacco retailers and suki vendors to register or renew their registration.

Assistant Health Minister Veena Bhatnagar says the Tobacco Control Enforcement Unit is carrying out a campaign and all retailers should use this opportunity to register themselves.

Bhatnagar says only person or retailers with a valid business license can sell tobacco products and those who are not registered may end up paying fines.

“The suki vendors actually question that why do they have to pay for a larger amount than the retail shops. The reason being that suki vendors pay a higher amount of fees is that suki is a non-taxable produce where no one involved from the point of cultivation to the point of sale have to pay any tax or any other fees except stall fees.”

The Ministry has already registered 600 retailers from Central and Western divisions.
