June 11, 2018 5:20 pm

The Ministry of Youth and Sports organised and coordinated a Community based three-day Resilience Training in Delaidamanu Village, Naitasiri earlier this month.

The training facilitated by the ministry together with the support of the Fiji Higher Education Commission was intended to create awareness on the impacts, adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

Minister for Youth and Sports – Laisenia Tuitubou, reminded participants that climate change was an issue affecting Pacific Island countries and has caused migration from the vulnerable islands.

Climate change he says affects global and regional climate patterns, particularly a change from the mid to late 20th century and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuel.

He adds we have seen many vulnerable Pacific Island countries affected by the impact of climate change causing mass migration.

Tuitubou added that the resilience training would assist the community to identify hazards and disaster, identify causes of climate change and how to implement adaptation and mitigation mechanisms.
