Reporting from within Parliament chambers will be possible at the next session of the House.

A new press gallery is currently under construction that will allow journalists into the Parliament chambers to report from for the first time in five years.

The Fijian Media Association’s General Secretary, Stanley Simpson says while it’s a welcomed initiative, more can be done to ensure parliamentary proceedings are reported accurately and fairly.

“Well, one thing is to get the Hansard or the document of proceedings to the media much quicker which would help with their reporting in a timely manner.  For the broadcast media, we’re wanting better audio and visual feeds so that it’ll help with our coverage.”

Simpson adds with the press gallery to be fully outfitted, journalists will have the advantage of being able to report directly from within the house to their respective organizations without having to leave the parliament precinct.

He says not only will this be more efficient for news organizations, but it will also mean Fijians are getting the story as and when it happens.
