Climate Change Director Nilesh Prakash says the process of relocating a settlement that is affected by climate change needs to be fully understood before processes are taken.
Prakash says the relocation of a settlement is very expensive.
He says this is why there are a lot of agencies involved before a settlement can be relocated.
“We need to understand the impacts, moving a community from their traditional settings where they have spent their entire lives has a number of impacts. The psych-social impacts is emerging and we need to understand that and how we can address this in future relocation.”
He adds the Vunidogoloa Village relocation in Vanua Levu cost them around one million Fijian dollars.
