Reliable data in short supply

February 4, 2016 12:44 am

The availability of reliable information on trade has become a problem in the Pacific.

Pacific Community Director General Colin Tukuitoga made this comment while launching the Pacific Islands Trade Report.

The report – from 2010 to 2014, amongst other things, shows the primary sector export products from 15 countries in the region.

Tukuitoga says while the report is an achievement worth celebrating, it highlights the need for reliable data.

“We are short on what I consider to be reliable, verifiable, believable, usable data and I am very pleased to be associated with this report. I think we need to start to act, manage more on the basis of information rather than what you hear at the rugby club.”

The Pacific Community hopes that, through the this report, trade partners, policy makers and leaders in the Pacific will be able to make more informed choices.
