Refrain from setting fire to bushes and forests: NFA

September 13, 2018 5:01 am

The National Fire Authority is pleading with the public to refrain from setting fire to bushes and forests, especially during this dry spell.

Chief executive, Manasa Lesuma says this is one of the driest times and there are a lot of risks and dangers when burning gets out of control.

Lesuma says while NFA is investing a lot in building new fire stations, it will never be enough to stop fires from happening.

He says the people have to understand the threats and risks involved.

“It can be a very nasty thing if it’s not addressed properly. Also, if people are not educated well or are made aware of the dangers and risks of taking this lightly.”

In the last few weeks, there have been numerous reports of cane fires in Labasa.

Police say while there have been forest fires, they are not receiving reports or complaints from the public.
