Reddy resigns as Education Minister

Education, Heritage and Arts Minister, Dr Mahendra Reddy has voluntarily resigned from his position.

In a statement released by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama this evening, he confirmed receiving a formal letter from Dr Reddy.

In a letter to the PM, Reddy stated that: “In order to preserve the reputation of Government, I wish to step aside by resigning as Minister for Education, Heritage, Arts and National Archives of Fiji while the charges laid by FICAC against me are heard.”

He stated: “This is a private matter and I need to clear my name without causing a distraction from the great work the FijiFirst Government is doing for the Fijian people."

Bainimarama says in accordance with the Constitution, he has accepted the resignation by Dr Reddy.

The PM will announce the appointment of an Acting Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts in due course.

Until the charges laid by FICAC are determined by the Court, the Dr. Reddy will remain as a Member of Parliament.

Dr Reddy’s case will be recalled on July 19th.
