With three months remaining for the tropical cyclone season to begin, relevant agencies are mobilizing resources.

This is to ensure efficient response when and where needed.

Fiji Red Cross Society Health and Care Coordinator Marica Kepa says they continue to engage volunteers who are always at the front-line to ensure everyone’s safety in any emergency.

“As soon as the disaster comes and after we are cleared after 72 hours we go out. We prepare the volunteers, they deployed out into the communities and they do the response, they do the assessment first and the response”.

Kepa says capacity building is crucial for their volunteers to be effective on the ground when the time comes.

“So what we do, every year our disaster unit they do a training every year, follow up training and they do refresher every now and then”.

The Fiji Red Cross in many instances been the first to reach areas devastated by natural disasters – providing food, water and sanitation supplies.
