The 8 villages of Yasawa-i-Rara, Teci, Tamusua, Navotua, Nacula, Naisisili, Yaqeta and Matacawalevu were filled with joy when a team of Government officials under the Rights, Empowerment and Cohesion (REACH) project conducted 12 civil marriages in their communities.

The first lot of civil marriages were conducted at the beach front of Yasawa-i-Rara village, which is one of the most distant villages in the Tikina of Yasawa.

Although it is a normal event throughout the year to have tourists tie the knot on their beach front, this was a more special event as the villagers witnessed their very own village members being wedded on the beach.

Speaking from Yasawa-i-Rara, Kinisimere Momolevu could not hold back her tears when her son Timoci Momolevu tied the knot during this visit.

Momolevu says that they have definitely saved a lot of money from travelling to Viti Levu for a civil marriage.

The Government officials are currently providing awareness and services in the District of Naviti and it intends to cover all the villages this week.
