Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu case heard in court

Suspended MP Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s challenge against his removal from parliament was heard in the Suva High Court today.

The case deals with the powers of the Speaker of the House, Dr Jiko Luveni, her Constitutional duties and the rights of the Opposition Member of Parliament.

Presiding Judge, Chief Justice Anthony Gates was informed that the Originating Summons filed by Ratu Naiqama will be withdrawn and a Constitutional Redress be heard in the next court sitting.

Solicitor General Sharvada Sharma is representing Dr Luveni while Queens Counsel, Julian Moti and Suva lawyer Simione Valenitabua represent Ratu Naiqama.

Chief Justice Anthony Gates has ordered that the amended motion by the plaintiff be filed within seven days and both parties have to consider their positions.

In the proceedings today, Justice Gates informed all parties to prepare themselves for full argument.
