Rapist mum sentenced to 13 years

A forty-five-year-old mother of Nasinu has been sentenced to thirteen years imprisonment for raping and sexually assaulting her fourteen-year-old daughter.

In sentencing the woman, Suva High court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo, said this is a serious breach of parental trust.

He says this is the first of its kind case in Fiji Courts.

The woman was charged with one count of rape and one count of sexual assault.

She is a single mother and has three sons and a daughter who is the victim and was fourteen-years of age at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred when the girl’s siblings were not at home.

The Court heard that between January and July last year the woman unlawfully and indecently raped and assaulted her daughter.

Justice Temo says the rape of a child will not be tolerated and will always be a serious matter in court.

He told the woman, mothers are supposed to look after and care for their daughters as well as counsel them to become better citizens.

He says daughters look to their mother for comfort and she broke her daughters trust by sexually abusing her.

She has a non-parole period of twelve years.
