Raping an elderly woman is a monstrous and dreadful act.

Suva High Court Judge Justice Vincent Perera while sentencing a 20-year-old man to 18 years in prison for raping an elderly woman last year said the younger generation should look after the elderly instead of harming them.

Meni Raitekiteki on the 18th of August last year broke into a house in Nepani, Nasinu where he assaulted and raped a 75-year-old woman.

He was armed with a knife and he also stole items worth over five thousand dollars from the house.

He is convicted of one count of Aggravated robbery, one count of rape and one count of giving false information to a public servant.

This morning, Raitekiteki was sentenced to seventeen years imprisionment by Judge Justice Vincent Perera who believes the offence is unacceptable.

Justice Perara says the convict not only raped the elderly woman but he also assaulted and punched her and as a result the woman received injuries.

Justice Perera told Raitekiteki that even though he is a young offender, he is not a first offender.

Raitekiteki has previously been convicted and sentenced for Aggravated robbery and theft.

Justice Perera told the court that being a habitual offender, Raitekiteki is a threat to the community.

Raitekiteki is eligible to apply for parole after serving fourteen years behind bars.
