A 36-year-old father of two has copped an 18 years sentence for raping his nine-year-old sister in Sigatoka two years ago.

The court heard that the victim is from a broken family as her mother is currently serving a sentence for murdering her elder daughter, while the accused’s wife is also in prison for the same murder case.

The victim was staying with the accused when he raped her on several occasions, however he was convicted of only one count of rape.

The 36-year-old man raped her between 30th April and 11th July 2016.

The victim informed her aunt about the incident on several occasions, however no one believed her.

Lautoka High court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge described this as one of the worst form of child rape cases ever tried in Fiji.

Justice Aluthge said the victim was badly affected by the murder of her sister, by the fact that the murderer was her mother and of her imprisonment.

The High court Judge said the accused was supposed to be the victims’ savior and had a duty of care ensuring the victim’s safety and well-being after being exposed to such extremely shocking events.

However, instead of protecting her and allowing her to recover – the accused preyed on her for his sexual gratification.

The man has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 15 years.
