The Sugar sector is expected to be strengthened further with plans for a massive upgrade of the national railway network.

Minister responsible and Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama says the Indian government is in the process of finalizing a report on the blueprint for the upgrade of the railway system.

Bainimarama says the railway overhaul is in-line with the on-going reforms to make the sugar sector more viable and sustainable in the years to come.

“Once that network is in place, we’ll be able to transport much larger loads of cane on the rail system, reducing cane cartage costs even further.”

Meanwhile, the government subsidies will continue to guarantee a cane price of $85 a tonne for the next two years which is $30 more than the current global price.
