Racial abuse on social media concerns PM

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has urged students to expose individuals who are using Social media to stir up hatred against fellow Fijians or ethnic differences.

Speaking at the USP Open Day earlier this morning, Bainimarama says this is not to threaten freedom of speech – inciting hatred against someone because of their ethnicity or their religion is a crime under Fijian law.

Bainimarama says students who use social media should be alert to these individuals and for them to do what they can to shame them.

He adds the government will come down hard on those who incite the kind of hatred that can easily lead to violence if it is not contained.
