Former Prime Minister and FHL Director – Laisenia Qarase will be sentenced tomorrow.
His lawyer Tupou Draunidalo has called for a suspended sentence or for the accused to do community work as per the Communities Act.
Draunidalo says they want a non-custodial sentence since his political career lies on this sentencing.
Prosecution lawyer Elizabeth Yang says taking into account the unanimous guilty verdict from the three assessors and the Judges verdict – the maximum sentence for this offence of three years imprisonment is applicable.
Qarase is convicted of six counts of abuse of office and three counts of discharge of duty with respect to a property in which he has a private interest.
