April 17, 2015 5:02 am

There will be changes to the Education Ministry’s policy on students having access to mobile phones during school hours.

Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy has ordered a review after an incident involving a teacher and a student with her mobile phone led to the death of the student from self-inflicted burns a few weeks ago.

The public will be able to express their views about the use of electronic gadgets like mobile phones and tablets in schools.

Dr Reddy says they will advertise for the submissions tomorrow.

“After that what we intend to do is to get a draft policy out and invite again comments on the draft policy which we then want to adopt. So we looking at probably by the end of July, we should probably have a new policy.”

Reddy says they want to undertake a broader view for a new policy that will be implemented after the consultations.
