As Hindus prepare for the festival of lights, the Government has sent out a warning in advance on the use of firecrackers and candles.
Defence Ministry Permanent Secretary – Jale Fotofili says firecrackers can only be used from the 8th to the 14th of this month.
Fotofili has also warned that the Legal Notice No. 131 of 2006 must be adhered to and firecrackers can been played between 5.00pm and 10.00pm except for Diwali Holiday where the time for discharge of firecrackers is from 5.00pm to 12 midnight.
He says it is illegal to sell firecrackers to persons under the age of 18 years and should be used under adult supervision.
Various agencies including the Fiji Police Force will monitor the sale and use of firecrackers around the country.
Diwali is celebrated on the 13th of this month.
