The public is advised to take heed of the heavy rain alert now in effect.

This was in relation to the issuance of a heavy rain alert for the Yasawa and Mamanuaca Group, Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and the Lomaiviti Group issued by the Fiji Met office yesterday.

National Disaster Management Office Director, Anare Leweniqila says they will activate evacuation centers if the need arises.

“We are requesting those that are located beside rivers and stream to monitor the situation as the water levels may change very quickly and also for the flood prone municipalities in Rakiraki, Ba and Tavua which experienced similar situations in the last few weeks to take precautions in case heavy rain continue into the night and also in the weekend.”

Leweniqila is urging the public to know their emergency contacts, their nearest evacuation centre, and prepare a Family Emergency Kit should the need of evacuation arises.

The heavy rain alert is caused by a low pressure system that lies to the west of Fiji and it’s expected to bring more cloud and rain as it moves closer towards the Fiji Group.

Thunderstorms and heavy falls may bring about flash flooding.

Fijians are advised to stay informed on further alerts and advisories.
